One of the many Child Visa options is for a permanent visa for adopted children. Subclass 102 is for overseas children who have been or are about to be adopted by an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or an eligible New Zealand citizen. The adoptive parent acts as a sponsor and lodges the Australian visa application for the child.
This visa type applies for children who are under 18 years of age. This Australian visa allows the child to live permanently in Australia with the adoptive parent and to travel in and out of Australia for five years from the date of visa grant.
If the adoptive visa is granted, it is the sponsor’s responsibility to support the child. Support includes accommodation and financial assistance for the child’s first two years in Australia.
For adoptive parents living in Australia, the State or Territory Adoption Authority (STAA) must be involved in the adoption process and must coordinate with the country where the overseas child is living.
As a sponsor, the adoptive parent must be 18 years old or over and should have the relevant residency status mentioned above. The child, on the other hand, must be below 18 and must be single. He or she should not be married, be in a de-facto relationship, or engaged to be married. The child must also meet health requirements and should be of good character (if over 16 years old).
An Assurance of Support is required for Australian visa applicants that are likely to become high users of Australia’s social security system.
