To identify the skill shortages in the Australian labor market, research is conducted by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations. The results of the research is published and labeled as state, territory, and national overview reports and lists, as well as occupational cluster reports and individual occupational reports.

Based on the data, it is revealed that the current employment market is the best it has been for employers in the past five years. Job seekers, however, face tougher competition when finding work in Australia as there is an increasing number of people gaining skills in particular fields for entry to Australia.

Here is some overview information on the situation of the skills shortage in Australia.

  • Of the 19 occupational groups in 2012, 12 of these were easier in terms of recruitment.
  • Compared to 2011, the percentage of vacancies filled was greater in 2012 which is set at around 68 percent. Additionally, a greater percentage of suitable applicants per vacancy were also noted.
  • It has also been seen that the shortage of occupations in 2012 was the smallest since 2007.

Among the hardest to fill vacancies for employer sponsored visas are automotive trades, engineering professionals, and resource sector occupations. Meanwhile, the easiest to fill include building associates, school teachers, and social and welfare professionals.

The report also indicated Darwin, Regional Western Australia, and Regional Northern Territory as the locations where recruitment is hardest. On the other hand, Adelaide, Brisbane, and Regional South Australia are the locations where recruitment for Australia skilled visa is easiest.

As for New South Wales and for some other regional areas in the country, the recruitment for Child Care Center Manager is difficult especially in the outside school hours care sector. There are also evident difficulties in the hiring of senior Urban and Regional Planners in Sydney and in several areas of regional NSW.

Other jobs in New South Wales where recruitment is difficult include positions in waste water and materials handling, jobs in day care centers, as well as positions for MRI specialists and Occupational Therapists.

In Sydney, job seekers are difficult to find especially those who specialize in Speech Pathology in the area of Paediatrics.

Additionally, recruitment is also difficult among construction and trades workers who apply for employer sponsored visas. This is particularly for joiners, qualified painters in regional areas like Illawarra, and also for roof plumbers.
