As part of your immigration to Australia, one of the top things that should be on your list is health insurance. Australia has a health benefit scheme to help immigrants, residents and citizens cover the basic medical expenses.

Depending on the Australian visa you hold, you may already be eligible to register for Medicare and gain immediate access to health care services and programs. Medicare offers assistance for public hospitals, out-of-hospital care and subsidised medicines.

It is an Australian government agency that plays a vital role in the health sector. Established in 1984, the system provides eligible Australian residents with affordable, accessible and high-quality health care.

The system is financed through progressive income tax and an income-related Medicare levy. The free or subsidized treatment applies to general practitioners, specialists and practicing optometrist.

To enroll in the program, you must go to the Medicare office 7 to 10 days from your arrival in Australia. You will need to present your passport, Australian visa and other travel documents.

Your Australian immigration visa may also make you eligible for the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. Under this program, the Australian Government makes ranges of necessary prescription medicine readily available and affordable for all Australian residents and overseas visitors under the Reciprocal Health Care Agreement. The program entitles participants to reduced concessional rates. The PBS Safety Net also provides financial assistance to individuals and families who use a lot of medicines in a calendar year.

Medicare does not provide for all medical services. Dental care, most optical care and ambulance services are not covered by this health benefit. As such, you may also want to consider other health insurance options.
